Courtney + Joe’s Rainy New Bern NC Engagement Session
New Bern is one of the few towns we haven’t had much of a chance to explore since moving here. So naturally, we jumped at the chance to spend a day there for Courtney and Joe’s engagement session! Joe is a volunteer firefighter with the city, so we started off their engagement session at the fire station before moving onto Fisher’s Landing Pointe to finish up the session. It’s always fun when couple’s center their engagement photos around their personalities, so Joe brought his motorcycle for a few photos at Promise Place Barn. This is the first time we’ve ever photographed a bike, so I was a little nervous – sometimes our ideas when props are involved walk a fine line between cheesy and awesome – but thankfully, I think we pulled it off! Courtney and Joe are seriously the cutest! It rained off and on the entire session, but they barely noticed! It was easy to see how much these two adore one another! We can’t wait to celebrate them in just a few months!!
From Courtney: “We met at a mutual friend’s wedding. He was the best man and I was a bridesmaid! Our first date is kind of hard to explain. I was still living up in the mountains at Western Carolina when he came up to see me. The night he arrived, we went down to the lake with some of my friends and had a small bonfire. Our second first date possibility was when I came down to New Bern to surprise him and we went to Buffalo Wild Wings. It was really fun because we just sat and talked; he taught me how to play poker. (I ended up beating him, which he claims was ‘beginner’s luck.’) We had been dating for 2 years when he asked me to marry him. The weekend of July 2nd, his riding club had their rendezvous – which is where they celebrate when the club was created. Members come in from all over the state and out of state to celebrate. Both of our parents were down, and my best friend came down for the weekend as well. That Saturday there was a ride, and when we got back to the clubhouse, everyone was just hanging out. One of the guys called me over to their group, and when I walked over, the guys parted and Joe was down on one knee! It was really special because we were surrounded by our family and friends. It was perfect! Our hobbies definitely include riding the motorcycle, firearms, camping, and basically just outdoor stuff. We also have 2 dogs, Artio and Buddy that are adorable.”
We wrapped up their engagement photos at Fisher’s Landing Pointe in New Bern. I’m so glad they chose this location, because we never would have known it was there otherwise! Fisher’s Landing is such a beautiful spot along the Neuse River. And it totally gave off some PNW vibes thanks to all of the rain that day. It’s definitely a hidden gem in New Bern!
NC Museum of Art Engagement Photos
We photographed Paige + Philip’s engagement session at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. These two will be tying the knot at the NCMA in the fall, so it was a great chance to walk the grounds together and discuss the day of logistics. The NCMA and adjacent park is HUGE and filled with so many amazing locations for photos – it was also a perfect chance for us to use some of the farther out locations that we might not be able to make it to on the wedding day.
My favorite part of the session though, happened when Philip changed into his second outfit. You know it’s a good sign when your couple ends up wearing the same outfit as you – and David and Philip were the cutest outfit twins! Seriously though, we had SO much fun with these two! It’s always really nice when you meet another couple and they instantly feel like old friends. We’re SO stoked to be celebrating Paige and Philip this fall. We can already tell these two are going to be throwing one amazing wedding!
How did you and Philip meet?
“We met through a family friend that worked in Philip’s department at his job. She is more like an older sister to me (because our parents are childhood best friends.) After finding out that we were both single, she began to play matchmaker. She set the stage, telling him stories about us growing up and how pretty I was. Meanwhile, she couldn’t stop saying how great he was – and really cute. She exchanged our phone numbers, and as they say, the rest is history!”
Tell us about your first date!
“Our first date was at the Cheesecake Factory. When I arrived, I waited on the bench by the front doors and suddenly, I see this really tall, nice-looking guy approaching me and right then I was really excited. Could be this be him? Oh it was! We spent the next few hours getting to know each other and ended the night with a photo. This was a blind date I’m sure glad I didn’t miss!”
Tell us a little about your upcoming wedding!
“Our wedding is going to be November 18, 2017 at the North Carolina Museum of Art. We will have our ceremony in the East Building among the many walls of art. Following that will be our reception in the West Building, where we hope to celebrate and dance the night away with our closest family and friends. We are envisioning a modern celebration with formal attire and a great time had by all!”
Philip, what do you love most about Paige?
“Paige is one of the most caring people I have ever met. She is always looking out for others and her kindness and love is evident in everything she does. Her positive energy and unwavering support makes everything in my life better and helps me through any bad day I may have. She makes me want to be a better person and I could ask for nothing else in a partner.”
How did Philip propose?
“It was a Tuesday night while I was cooking dinner. He asked me to come look at something in the spare bedroom he was working on for his parents – since they were coming within the next few days. I was bewildered! What could he have done without my knowledge? So we made our way up to the room and I still had no idea what was going on. He opened the closet doors and pulled out an empty Star Wars Lego box and put his hand in it. I had butterflies because I was hoping that it was ‘The Time’, but still had no clue what he was thinking. Then he looked me in the eye and said some wonderful things, which I can’t remember because I was so stunned. He then got down on one knee and asked me to be with him forever. We both started cryin as I said, ‘of couse!’ It was the most perfect moment and in true fashion, he did not cease to amaze me with his grandmother’s diamond in the setting we loved. After 5 years, you can say I was beyond ready to be his forever!”
How would you describe Philip?
“Philip is a very hard working, driven individual that puts his all into everything he does. As my partner in life, he is my rock; always grounding me and showing me what true love really means. He is also very caring and devoted, wearing his heart on his sleeve. Philip is hilarious, making me laugh constantly! I believe the most important quality he possesses is his endearment. He never lets a conversation end without saying ‘I love you.’ I cherish that about him.
What are your favorite ways to unwind together?
“We are homebodies, so if you happen to catch us on any given week night – we are probably watching an old episode of Seinfeld, while he is helping me cook a new recipe in the kitchen. On the weekends, you can count on something sports related being watch on TV! Even though we don’t do it often enough, we love to travel. And by that, I mean taking a road trip with each other. Whether we are traveling to meet family or friends, we always try to make time to go exploring new things on our own.

Chattahoochee River Engagement Photos
Shari + Will
We headed down to Atlanta a few weeks ago to meet up with Shari and Will for their engagement session. These two will be tying the knot at Highland Brewing Co. in Asheville later this summer, which we’re SUPER stoked about! But in the meantime, we wanted to document their engagement on their home turf. Shari and Will are super outdoorsy, and Shari wanted their photos to have a more woodsy/river vibe. So we ventured over to the West Palisades Trail (Thanks, Erica!) which winds along the Chattahoochee River just outside of Atlanta. You guys – this place was awesome! I’m so sad that we live too far away to enjoy the Chattahoochee – it’s the perfect river for a leisurely float weekend!
Shari and Will were SO much fun to hang out with though! It’s always really nice when you feel like you click well with a couple – and they couldn’t have been more laid-back or sweet! We’re so excited for their brewery wedding! Just a couple more months!
How did the two of you meet?
“Our friend Lauren set us up by making sure we’d both be at the same Super Bowl Party. It was love at first jalapeno popper.”
Tell us about your first date!
“Shari was going camping with her brother and his friends at Panther Creek in North Georgia, and asked Will and the aforementioned Lauren and her husband to join. It wasn’t a typical date, but it’s when we had our first kiss, so we count it. 🙂 Our actual first date was at Cheesecake Factory…lame.”
How did Will propose?
“Unlike most girls, Shari always said she wanted a proposal on the big screen at a sporting event. Every time they went to a game, she was prepared! So it caught her completely off-guard when Will got down on one knee while they were hiking the Maroon Bells in Colorado. After she caught her breath – the altitude is no joke – and determined that Will was, in fact serious, she, of course, said yes. (She wouldn’t mind a second proposal at a football game, though!)”
What are some of your favorite ways to unwind together?
“Sports. (Shari’s gotten better, but she definitely had a Ticketmaster problem when they first started dating.) Traveling. Beer! (Was that obvious from our wedding venue? We love trying new breweries.) Lazy Sundays on the couch. Doting on our nephews and nieces. <3”
Downtown Durham Engagement Photographers
Lauren + Murray
We met up with Lauren and Murray at Ponysaurus Brewing for a few drinks and photos before roaming through downtown Durham for their engagement session. This was a really fun engagement session for us because we’ve known Lauren socially for a few years now, and we’ve been able to witness her relationship with Murray blossom a bit. It wasn’t that long ago that she was cooking dinner for us and talking about the major crush she had on her super cute boss! 🙂
These two really are one of the sweetest couples! We can’t wait to photograph their Rickhouse wedding later this fall! Less than 4 months to go, guys!!
How did you and Murray meet?
“We met while working at Washington Duke Inn. He was my boss!”
What do you love most about Lauren?
“Her sunshine personality and smile were the first things that had me hooked. Upon getting to know her, I knew she was the one. Her passion and drive, coupled with her imagination and wit proved to me that she was the whole package! She makes me better and makes me want to be better for our forever.”
What do you admire most in Murray?
“His dedication and passion for his work is what really caught my attention. He is also quite handsome. After getting to know him, I realized he’s one of the most caring and genuine people I’ve ever known. He’s the best friend I’ve ever had! Every time I look at him, I think to myself, ‘I’m the luckiest gal because I get to spend forever with him.'”
Tell us about your first date!
“I asked him out for drinks on St. Patty’s Day. It only took me a year to ask! I nabbed my Irish man on his holiday! 🙂 We went to 5850 Bistro, and we’ve been smitten ever since.”
How did Murray propose to you?
“Murray proposed at Mystery Brewing after setting it up for me to brew my very own beer recipe with Erik Lars Meyers (owner and brewmaster of Mystery, and President of the NC Brewers Guild.) He proposed after we wrapped up the whole brewing process!”
What’s your favorite way to spend the day together?
“We Netflix and Chill on our days off together, along with our fur babies, Garvin (the cat), Ladybyrd, and Halo (the dogs.) We frequent Ponysaurus Brewing. We also enjoy visiting with our families. Since we’re so busy with work, time with our families is very valuable to us.
We photographed Tori and DJ’s engagement session at Ole Gilliam Park in Sanford recently, and totally fell in love with both them and the location they chose! This rustic property provided the most beautiful setting for their rustic chic engagement. The park is filled with really cool old cabins, industrial farming equipment, and a really pretty dock that overlooks the grounds. Seriously – it was perfect for these two!
Tori and DJ basically grew up together and this sweet couple definitely had tons of chemistry! They were so much fun to work with…and I think David and I are even more excited for their big day after spending an evening with them!
How did you and DJ meet?
“DJ and I met at Tramway Elementary School in 3rd grade. The first day of 3rd grade he told his aunt Vicky that I was the prettiest girl he had ever seen! I had no idea until about 3 and a half years ago when we started dating and she told me! We were always friends but kind of lost touch through high school since we went to different schools. We rekindled our friendship when I was in college based on tweets about awesome Netflix shows. Needless to say, our love for each other & Netflix has grown ever since.”
Where did you go on your first date?
“We went to see GI Joe in DJ’s 1990 Jeep Wrangler, and we were so incredibly awkward the whole time. It was followed by an awkward milkshake run to Cook Out. DJ and I are probably two of the most awkward people in the world, so putting us both together – we knew we were in for it. DJ says all he can remember from our first date is how loud my heels were (…such a man!) After he dropped me off, we talked all night and realized we actually had so much to talk about. After that, we started not even worrying ourselves with distractions like movies and milkshakes, and just rode around in the car for hours every night, talking and laughing until 2am (when I eventually had to sneak back into my house so I wouldn’t wake up my parents!)”
What are you favorite qualities in DJ?
“DJ is the most genuine person I have ever met. He loves everyone and everything with his whole heart. He really cares for everyone he comes into contact with. DJ is just a comfortable person to be around. Although it takes time for him to open up, he feels like home once he does. One of the things I love most about DJ is how much he loves our dogs. They are really like our children and I feel that how people treat animals shows their true selves.”
How did DJ propose to you?
“DJ proposed in a really simple way, which I was totally in love with because we are really simple people. DJ was at home from school for the weekend and I was at work. He had the ring for a few days and was trying to find a way to propose to me. On March 10, 2016, I came home from work and there were probably 200 small candles lit all around my apartment and roses on the counter. DJ got down on one knee as soon as I walked in the door and asked me to marry him! It was just us, and it was the best proposal ever!”
What are your favorite ways to unwind together?
“We really just spend time with our dogs on our days off. We both feel so bad about him being at school during the week and me being at work during the day, that we do not want them to be cooped up all the time. We love chasing them around and taking them on walks. We really just love to relax together laying on the couch, watching movies, and eating popcorn. I love that we can do absolutely nothing but it’s still always a good time. When we aren’t with our dogs, we spend a lot of time with our family. DJ and I both believe that family is the most important thing. We are both really close to our parents, so we like to spend as much time with them as possible.”
What do you admire most in Tori?
“When I think of Tori, I think of someone who is selfless. She’s someone who cares more about the well-being of others than her own. She goes out of her way to make sure that other people are happy. She’s also an animal lover all the way to her core and those are just two of the many things I love about her.”
Tell us about your wedding! What’s been your favorite part of the process so far?
“We are getting married at The Barn at Woodlake Meadows. This was the only venue we went to because we fell in love with it instantly! It’s super rustic which really fits our personalities. It’s a relaxing environment and it has absolutely beautiful scenery! The owners are so nice and laid back – we love people like that. I have changed the colors of our wedding probably 3 times so that is still yet to be determined, haha. (Have I mentioned that I am awful at making decisions?) It sounds cliche, but what we are most excited about is BEING MARRIED! We are so excited to take on life together. Our favorite part of the wedding planning process has definitely been our engagement pictures!! We were seriously so happy when we got in the car after our pictures. I could hardly contain myself. It was such a stress reliever and it made me even more excited to get married. We are so excited for May 27, 2017!!!
“Thanks to Kacie Lorenzo and Studio C Salon and Spa
for doing my makeup & hair and for always making me feel fabulous!”
