Raleigh Rose Garden Engagement
Howie proposed to Jo at the Raleigh Rose Garden in downtown Raleigh, so it was only fitting that their engagement session took place there as well. This sweet couple was SO much fun to work with! We can’t wait for their downtown Asheboro wedding next spring.
How did you guys meet?
“Howie and I met when we were both in 8th grade. One of my friends convinced me to become a wrestling manager. Howie was a wrestler who just so happened to have a broken collar bone. Since he was injured, he wasn’t able to partake in practice, but still had to attend. I will never forget walking into practice and seeing this really cute guy sitting on one of the rolled up mats. I knew then, this boy was different than all the others.”
Tell us about your first date!
“We became best friends shortly after we met, but I never told him how I truly felt about him. Finally, one day in 11th grade, he invited me over to his house to play Guitar Hero, because we had a bet on who was better. We went to Wendy’s after school and headed to his house. We hung out all afternoon talking about everything under the sun and playing Guitar Hero. That afternoon, he finally asked me to be his girlfriend!”
How did Howie pop the question?
“Howie proposed two days after my birthday. At that time, Howie and I were both still in college, so we decided that I would come up to Raleigh for the weekend and we could go out for a nice dinner. I had invited my grandma and aunt to meet us for dinner as well. After we both got ready, we got in the car heading to the restaurant – or so I thought! Howie told me that he wanted to show me something really quick before dinner. By that point, I was hangry and I tried to convince him to let me call my family to at least go ahead and get a table. When we finally parked, he made me get out of the car and go for a walk with them. I was very frustrated because all I wanted to do was eat! After walking for a couple minutes, he stopped and made me put my hands over my eyes (at this point I would have done anything just to hurry this up!) He started leading me down a gravel pathway. Finally, he said I could uncover my eyes. When I looked up I saw a beautiful field of roses! I was so amazed! I wanted to stop and take pictures of all the flowers, but I could tell he had other intentions. He took hold of my hand and led me to another part of the garden. When we turned the corner, I was surprised to see both our families there yelling, ‘Happy Birthday!’ I was shocked, but kind of upset because that meant no one was at the restaurant getting us a table… We began walking around the garden and someone suggested that Howie and I get our picture taken in front of the fountain. I went to pose for a snapshot, and looked over to see Howie getting down on one knee. I had NO CLUE what he was doing and was in utter shock! Of course, I said yes!”
Downtown Charleston Engagement Photographers
You guys, I LOVE Charleston! It’s such a gorgeous, charming little city. So when Michelle and Rich contacted us to photograph their downtown Charleston engagement – we were thrilled! I mean, you really can’t go wrong in Charleston. Every street is filled with so much beautiful history and texture. I think the hardest part of photographing engagements there is narrowing down which neighborhoods to photograph in.
We ended up starting off Michelle and Rich’s engagement near Rainbow Row, a series of 13 colorful, historic homes. And then heading down a few of the side streets along Bay St. before finishing up the session with the couple’s adorable dogs along the ruins of Ashley Hall Plantation.
These two are from Chicago, so this was our first time meeting them (and just a few days before their wedding!) It was great to finally get to talk about all of their destination wedding plans and learn more about the amazing beach house they’d rented for their vows. Michelle and Rich were adorable together and had so much chemistry, it made our jobs super easy!
We can’t wait to share their Folly Beach wedding, but here’s a peek at their historic Charleston engagement session in the meantime!
(Michelle and Rich loved these horse drawn carriages. So anytime we saw one of them head our way, we’d position the couple and wait for it to pass. These two are in SO many tourists photos! 😂)
Michelle’s dress is from BHLDN.

Duke Gardens Engagement
Andrea + Shaun
We’ve been impatiently waiting for Andrea and Shaun’s wedding for over a year and a half now – and we’re so excited that their big day is finally here! This super sweet couple will be exchanging vows at The Longhouse in Stokesdale THIS weekend! Yay!!
In the meantime, a here’s a peek at some of their engagement photos taken at Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham last fall. Aren’t they the cutest?!
How did the two of you meet?
“Shaun and I met many, many years ago when I was still a senior in high school and he has just transferred to NC State University to finish our his bachelor’s degree. A mutual friend of ours introduced us at my neighbor’s annual Christmas party and we hit it off instantly. That night we went for a very cold and windy walk with our group of friends and Shaun pulled me in close to keep me warm. It wasn’t long after that that we started dating and the rest is history.”
What do you admire most about Shaun?
“Shaun and I are both nerdy in our own way and very goofy people. Shaun works in e-commerce working on web stores, so he’s my technical guru. I admire Shaun for his drive in life to succeed at what he does and his adorable charm. Shaun alaways tries to keep a positive outlook on life and I love the fact that he is a self-teacher, an amazing cook, and loves me for me.”
What do you love most about Andrea?
“Andrea is my best friend and she’s the sweetest, most caring person I’ve met in my entire life. She fills me with happiness, love, and lots of plans! But she also helps me be a better person. I admire her emotional intelligence, her selflessness, and the way she loves unconditionally.”
Tell us about the proposal!
“We had rented a cabin in the NC Mountains for our eight year anniversary. A marriage proposal was something I was anticipating would happen on the trip. Days before the trip, Shaun eluded to me the idea that it wasn’t going to happen. We decided for this anniversary that the trip and the cabin was our gift to each other, however, I had made Shaun a DIY gift since I am a big gift giver. Shaun then handed me a love note to read, and as I read it, he got down on one knee in our adorably perfect, cozy cabin and asked me to marry him.”
What are some of your favorite ways to unwind together?
“Shaun and I enjoy our downtime quite a bit, however, we are very big on exploring new places and spending time with our group of friends. On weekends we like to go hiking at Umstead State Park or go for walks with our little dog Charlie. We are big on traveling to the NC Mountains once or twice a year. During the week we spend our downtime watching movies, cooking elaborate meals or trying new restaurants.”

NC Museum of Natural Sciences Wedding
Meredith and John’s NC Museum of Natural Sciences wedding took place over the summer. They were wed in the Nature Research Center.
We were wandering around the NC Museum of Natural Sciences
last year when we got an email from Meredith inquiring about her wedding. I’m pretty sure I had just
mentioned to David how awesome it would be to photograph a wedding there, so needless to say – we were pretty psyched!
We have LOVED being able to get to know Meredith and John over the last year. They’re a really sweet, laid-back couple – and it was such a blast to photograph their fun and quirky science museum wedding in downtown Raleigh. The museum’s Nature Center
served as their wedding headquarters for the day, and it was decorated beautifully with a mix of white roses and hydrangea’s from John’s family garden. Their first dance took place in the interior of the iconic Daily Planet globe – which is really cool! And they finished off the night with a pedicab ride to their favorite neighborhood bar. I love that they were able to make their wedding entirely their own! It was a beautiful day, and we wish them all the best!
Tell us about your wedding! What was your inspiration?
“We got married on June 25, 2016 at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Downtown Raleigh. We had our ceremony in the atrium of the Nature Research Center and the reception in the exhibits on the same floor. We have lived in Downtown Raleigh for the past 8 years and went on one of our first few dates at the museum. When we found out that they did weddings, we knew we had to check it out!”
How did John propose to you?
“John proposed in Duke Gardens last summer. He had a whole day of events planned after the proposal. We went to brunch then met up with a bunch of friends at an outdoor concert in Carrboro. We love live music and got to see one of our favorite bands, Future Islands. It was an amazing day!”
How did you two meet?
“We met working at Duke TIP in Durham a little over 9 years ago. Our first date was dinner at a little Italian restaurant in Raleigh and seeing the 5th Harry Potter movie on iMax. At the time, I lived in Athens, GA and John lived in Raleigh, so we decided to continue dating long-distance after camp was over.”
What were some of your favorite wedding details?
“John’s mom and aunt did all of our flowers and they were AMAZING. I loved my bouquet! John’s mom and aunt also added some really nice personal touches to the flowers, like John’s grandma’s pin attached to his boutonniere.”
What are some of Meredith’s best qualities?
“My favorite things about Meredith are her independence and creativity. She’s thoughtful and loving and not afraid to show how much she cares.”
How would you describe John?
“John is hilarious and witty, but he also has a serious side. He’s caring, loyal, and a great cook. I also love how super smart and nerdy he is! :)”
What is your favorite wedding day memory?
“It’s hard to pick one! I really enjoyed spending some time together after the ceremony, just the two of us. We spent about five minutes together breathing a sigh of relief, taking pictures, and just basking in the glow of being newly-married.”
Do you have any advice for couples currently planning their own wedding?
“Plan the details that you can, but don’t stress over the stuff you don’t have control over!”
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
“We traveled up the coast of Maine for our honeymoon – Portland, Rockland, and Bar Harbor.”
